Die Gesellschaft für bedrohte Völker hat im Rahmen ihrer Olympia-Kampagne 2008 einen Online-Appell an den Olympia-Sponsor Volkswagen gestartet Es geht dabei darum, dass China den Sudan trotz der Verbrechen in Darfur politisch unterstützt und enge Wirtschaftsbeziehungen mit ihm unterhält. China soll seinen Einfluss viel stärker dazu nutzen, die sudanesische Regierung zu einer Änderung ihrer Politik zu drängen.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I have heard that your company is a sponsor of the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing. Your company has repeatedly professed to its social responsibility.
I adress myself therefore to you today to ask you as one of the sponsors of the Olympics to call on China’s Government to use its enormous influence on the Sudan to end the genocide in Darfur. No other government in the world has more influence on those in power in Sudan as the Chinese leadership. After the violent death of up to 400,000 people in the west of Sudan, the situation of the civilian population is deteriorating steadily.
The resignation of the renowned director Steven Spielberg as artistic adviser to the organizers of the Olympics in February 2008 brought about a massive loss of China’s image. When the Olympic Games begin and in Darfur genocide still happens, it would also cast a cloud over your sponsor activity and your company. Please be active therefore and urge the Chinese government and the International Olympic Committee to advocate more dedicated the protection of the civilian population in Darfur and an end to the genocide crimes.
